Planning your Remodel from Home

I hope this finds you healthy and well during these strange, unprecedented times.

I’ve heard a lot of opinions about things we can do to keep ourselves busy as we stay home more, but I’ve discovered that sometimes all I want to do is curl up on the sofa with my dogs and watch Netflix.

If you’re like me, you might be binge watching home improvement shows to pass the time and your “honey-do” list is starting to grow. Maybe now is a good time to think about the projects you’d like to do around your house in the future, without leaving the comfort of your home.

Start Your Research (Yes, I’m calling binge-watching Netflix research)

As you watch the shows, see what jumps out at you and start thinking about what you want your space to look like. Start thinking about a color scheme. Start thinking about materials you’d like to use.

If you get tired of sitting on the sofa, you can use your phone or tablet to check out websites like Houzz and Pinterest and start saving photos that you like. Pro tip: make sure to make notes of what you like about the photo to reference back to.

Wishlist vs. Must-Haves

This one is really important.  What is the purpose of your remodel? Is it to make your space more stylish? Is it to make it more functional? Whatever the case, make a list of the things that are most important to you as well as things that you would love to have but aren’t absolutely necessary for your project.  That will really help when you get to the next step.

Plan Your Budget

By now, you have a good idea of the materials you’d like to use and a list of priorities for your project.  Much like buying a car, it helps to know if you want to buy a Chevrolet or a Cadillac.  Both of them make great cars, but there’s going to be a difference in price.

Masterbrand, the manufacturer of Omega and Mid Continent Cabinetry, which we use at Miramar Kitchen & Bath, has a tool for calculating your budget that can help you get started. Check it out by clicking here

Finish Your Research (sorry, this one doesn’t include Netflix)

Check out contractors and remodeling companies’ web sites to see who does the type of work you’re interested in.  Call or email them to learn more about their services – a lot of us are still open for business and are happy to help.

Do some background work on the companies you’re considering.  Check web sites like the California Contractor’s State License Board and the Better Business Bureau.
