Cabinets 101: How to Choose Cabinets that Fit your Budget & Taste

The remodeling process can be overwhelming– especially with so many different choices on the market. In this blog, we will talk about some of the different cabinet choices out there and how to determine what will be the best option for you.

Here we discuss three different types of cabinets for consumers to consider: stock or RTA/ KD, semi-custom and custom. Here is an overview of each and their pros and cons:

Stock Cabinets or RTA/ KD

Stock cabinets are manufactured in a limited selection of standard sizes and finishes. These can be held in inventory for quick delivery. There are also ready-to-assemble (RTA) or knock-down (KD) cabinets that are also readily available and sold in a flat pack so they can be easily stored. All of these cabinets can be found at big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes and IKEA.

If you’re looking to remodel your kitchen and want to keep the cost as low as possible, these might be a great choice for you.

Price Range: Low

Pros:
-Already made & in stock at a warehouse
-Can get in 1-2 weeks
-Cost effective

Cons:
-No customization options
-You or your contractor may have to assemble the cabinets
-Warranty is more limited than semi-custom or custom

Semi-Custom Cabinets

semi-custom cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets are built-to-order. With semi-custom cabinets, you have far more options than stock cabinetry. You will have the opportunity to choose your door style, finish, and what is in the cabinets (rollouts, drawer organizers, shelves, etc.).

Semi-custom cabinets are a great option for people who are planning to live at the residence for many years – you can design to your preference and may also qualify for a lifetime warranty.

Price Range: Mid to High

Pros:
-Made to order for you-Many different options
-Usually come with lifetime warranty on the finish as well as the hardware

Cons:
-Since they are made to order, they take longer to get.

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are exactly what you would think – custom in every aspect. Not only are you able to have all of the benefits of semi-custom cabinets, custom cabinets are made to your exact specifications, including the dimensions of the cabinets.

Custom cabinets are a great option for people who have special needs in the kitchen – they can be customized to fit every need and preference you have.

Price Range: High

Pros:
-Made to order
-Endless customization options

Cons:
-Much like semi-custom cabinets, custom cabinets take a while to get
-Most expensive option
